A Fork in the Road: Choosing the Right Health Plan

Cheryl Lagunilla • April 4, 2026

Imagine you’re standing at a fork in the road.

One path is clearly marked. It’s familiar. It’s where most people go.
The other path is less obvious—but it might offer more flexibility, better access, and a route better suited to your life.

 The Familiar Path: State-Based Plans

For most, the journey starts with marketplace plans.

They’re accessible and widely known—but they often come with limitations:

  • Coverage tied to one state
  • Narrow provider networks
  • Higher costs for those who don’t qualify for subsidies
  • Enrollment restricted to specific times of year

For some, this path works just fine.

But for others—especially those who travel, split time between locations, or want broader access—it can feel restrictive.

The Other Path: Private Plan Options

Then there’s the path fewer people know about.

Private and alternative health plans offer a different route—one that may include:

  • National provider access
  • Greater flexibility in plan design
  • Potential cost advantages depending on your situation

These plans aren’t for everyone, and they’re not always the right choice.

But they are an option—and one worth exploring.

The Real Question Isn’t Which Path Is “Better”

It’s which path is right for you.

Every client I work with has a different starting point:

  • Different doctors
  • Different needs
  • Different priorities
  • Different lifestyles

That’s why there’s no one-size-fits-all answer.

Where I Come In

My role isn’t to push you down one road.

It’s to help you:

  • Understand the options
  • See what’s available beyond the obvious
  • Choose a path that aligns with how you actually live

The Bottom Line

Most people don’t realize they have a choice.

But once you do, the conversation changes.
